Journey to Become Master Beusse

Recently a friend asked me what I felt the benefits of Tae Kwon Do training are for me and what I feel my purpose is now that I’ve joined the SUSA program, so I will try to explain.

Personally, the greatest benefit has been time spent with my family, especially my son David. When he was 5 years old he expressed interest in joining Yoo’s Martial Arts but he was too young for the children’s class. However, he could attend family classes if he were with a sibling or a parent! So he and I decided to do it together and we signed up immediately. David and I trained for 9 years together through every belt rank all the way to 3rd degree black belt. We had a great journey together that we’ll always remember.

It became even better when my wife Lisa and daughter Nicole joined too. So for several years we were all attending as a family. If you had asked me what I wanted to do together as a family, I don’t think I ever would have imagined Tae Kwon Do. Again it was a time we’ll never forget as we were all committed, we worked hard together and supported each other. Eventually the day came when we were all black belts! We all enjoyed those years very much.

The overall benefits I’ve experienced helped me in many parts of my life. As Master Yoo focuses on training the body, mind and spirit, I benefit from these challenging but worthwhile goals too.

The physical training never ceases to amaze me, as there is always something new, often something we’ve never done before but it’s always interesting. It can be strength, endurance and speed training or it can be form, balance and coordination, you never know, the list goes on but I always try.

Training the mind is mainly about keeping an open mind. In class I will try new things all the time but in my daily life I may not. I may say I’m not good at this or that and give up before I start. However the lesson is that it’s best to keep an open mind and put aside negative thoughts to attain good goals.

Training the spirit encourages students to focus, understand and realize you can awaken your own personal energy. It helps me to bring out my positive energy when I’m having a tough day and there are issues out of my control. Meditation is one of many techniques I’ve learned to train the spirit.

I’ve now joined the SUSA program to learn how to teach Tae Kwon Do. The purpose of this program for me is to combine my experience with the proper way to teach Tae Kwon Do. It is rewarding to work with other students, especially children and I hope they enjoy all the benefits as much as I do. Additionally learning proper teaching techniques will help me in my own personal and professional life too. It won’t be the first time I’ll be able to use what I’ve learned at Yoo’s Martial Arts!
