May 2026 Black Belt Outdoor Test | Hong Ik Martial Arts

On May 3rd, 2026, over 50 Hong Ik Martial Arts students took their outdoor black belt test.  There were 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Degree candidates broken up into two test times; 6:30 AM and 7:45 AM – following the standard format of backpack and mid distance running, hill sprints, freestyle kicking, and meditation.

Grand Master Yoo spoke about “three buttons”.  One button is that of negotiation.  Another button is contentment with mediocrity.  The last is the challenge button.  When experiencing fatigue during the long distance and/or sprints, the individual has a choice to either embrace adversity intensely, take a lukewarm approach, or shut down.  Some may start to question why they have to do this or feel worried about their well being because their breathing has become shorter.  Like much of the martial arts physical practice, it can reflect one’s regular life.  Some people feel satisfied performing at an average level where they don’t fail but never look to fully reach their potential because of the uncomfortably high obstacles they are presented with.  This outdoor examination may help one to confront pressure more openly, with the support of friends, teachers, and Mother Nature.  Willpower is the key.  Hopefully all can incorporate training in the great outdoors and transform their consciousness to become luminous like the sun that beautiful morning.
