SUSA & MUSA TRYOUTS AND RANK PROMOTION TEST – NOVEMBER 2025
On November 8, over 81 students tested to become Susa/Musa or try for the next rank in their respective HIMA Elite Leadership Group. There were 2 rings setup with at least 3 Masters administering the exam in each ring, all under the supervision of Grand Master Yoo. In order to participate, each individual must be selected by their regional Master. Important characteristics to be nominated for the tryout are concentration and a willingness to contribute to others. Several practices are held to prepare them for their distinct tryout routine. The Susa tryouts consist of a combination course displaying the candidates' kicking, jumping, reaction, and Qigong skills. Musa tryouts have a combination course whichrequires the students to display their potential for demonstration and sparring skills. Requirements for both Susa and Musa are being able to complete 21 pushups and 36 self sit-ups. Furthermore, they must exhibit proper posture, high energy, and focus on all of the above.
Test results are notified during the week after the tryout, as many categories need to be reviewed by all HIMA Staff. If students pass the Musa tryout, they earn their first patch indicating the 1st of 6 ranks in that program. Students who pass the Susa tryout that day now move on to a 3 week evaluation where they are to show punctuality, commitment, and leadership potential.
Current Susas and Musas become eligible to strive for their next rank based on a few factors. They must know their required curriculum. The Susa curriculum consists mainly of Qigong, Kicking Combinations, Study Guide material, and knowledge of how to teach certain belt groups (physical training and principles). Musa curriculum includes WT Sparring, Street Fighting, Swordsmanship, and Demonstration. Both HIMA Elite Leadership Groups require contribution to events at the Dojang such as promotion tests, street fairs, local school functions, birthday parties, HIMAF, etc.
Like the tryouts, results of the rank promotion tests are given the week after HIMA Staff grading. Students who pass undertake new training but are also responsible for sharpening up skills they learned previously. Any of those who did not pass are invited to the makeup test on 12/21/25 at HIMA Tarrytown HQ at 2:45 PM. Please confirm with your regional Master.
