Hong Ik Martial Arts Nunchuck Workshop HIMA Nunchuck Workshop (Level 1 thru 4) – December 2025
Nunchuck Workshop
December 20, 2025 – Tarrytown, NY
On December 20, 2025, Hong Ik Martial Arts of Tarrytown proudly hosted a dynamic Nunchuck Workshop, bringing together students from all Hong Ik Martial Arts locations (Hong Ik Martial Arts of Tarrytown, Hong Ik Martial Arts of Mahwah, Hong Ik Martial Arts of Fair Lawn, Hong Ik Martial Arts of New Rochelle, Hong Ik Martial Arts of Brewster, Hong Ik Martial Arts of Bronxville) for an exciting afternoon of learning, practice, and fun. The event was thoughtfully divided into two sessions: one for Level 1 students, and a second for Levels 2, 3, and 4.
Participants were introduced to fundamental techniques with a strong emphasis on fluid movement, helping them unlock the potential of this traditional martial arts weapon. Throughout both workshops, safety, precision, and creativity were key focal points as students gained valuable skills and confidence in their training.
Workshop 1 – Level 1 Techniques
- Basic Spins – Spinning the nunchuck in a controlled manner
- Shoulder Dribble – Over the shoulder and under the armpit
- Waist Dribble – From hip to hip
- Triangle – A common striking motion: over the shoulder, across to the hip, to the other hip, and back over the shoulder
- Infinity – Sideways figure 8s in front of the body
- Shoulder Catch – Catching the nunchuck after hoisting it over the shoulder; often used to switch hands
Workshop 2 – Advanced Levels
Level 2 Techniques (Review 1–6 first)
7. Armpit Catch – Catching the nunchuck with the armpit; used to keep it stationary while performing other techniques such as kicks
8. Waist Switch – Switching hands while performing waist dribbles
9. Hand Spins – Spinning the nunchuck around the hand
10. Combination – Skipping front snap kick, slide back, triangle strike, armpit catch
Level 3 Techniques (Review 1–10 first)
11. Waist Spins – Using spins while performing waist dribbles
12. Triangle–Waist Spin Combination – After completing one set, switching hands using Technique #6
13. Combination – Skipping roundhouse kick, slide back, triangle waist spin, armpit catch
Level 4 Techniques (Review 1–13 first)
14. Back Catch – Catching the nunchuck behind the back; excellent for positioning the nunchuck for powerful strikes
15. Infinity Strike – A strike combining the back catch and a sideways infinity movement; works well with spinning footwork
16. Nunchuck Poomse – A sequence of footwork, stances, and nunchuck movements incorporating all techniques from Levels 1–4
After learning and practicing in their respective groups, students came together for an engaging target-striking session. Paired with partners, they took turns holding long targets while their partners applied the techniques they had learned.
- Level 1 students focused on basic triangle strikes
- Levels 2, 3, and 4 students practiced advanced combinations using footwork to strike multiple targets across the mat
As the workshops ended, the room buzzed with energy and a strong sense of accomplishment. Students left not only with improved technique, but with a renewed appreciation for the discipline and artistry of the nunchuck.
To cap off the event, students received their official workshop certifications. We look forward to seeing their continued growth at the next workshop!
