HST (Hyunsa and Susa Training) June 21, 2026 | Hong Ik Martial Arts

Hyunsa SuSa Training

June 21, 2026

Tarrytown, NY

Every month, all Hyunsa (Masters) and SuSa from all Hong Ik Martial Arts locations meet at the Tarrytown Dojang to train under Grand Master Yoo. It is a chance for SuSa and Masters to study the SuSa curriculum more in depth, strengthen their understanding of specific techniques, and gain a deeper understanding of the Hong Ik Martial Arts philosophy, which is essential as Susa’s are required to lead by example. This month’s HST was the first leadership class for new Susa Recruits who earned their spot from the March 21st tryouts, as the last 3 months were dedicated to HIMAF Demo Team preparation.

June 21st Training Outline–

  1. Warmups – Directed by SUSA Captain Kayden
  2. Lateral Qigong led by Grandmaster Yoo
    1. Horseback stance punching starting going towards the left side following the pattern 1, 3 and 1, 2 then follow the same pattern but going towards the right side
    2. Emphasis on transitions and remaining centered
    3. Helps to slowly raise energy levels and bring the class to a heightened level of focus and awareness.
  3. Kicking  Combinations
    1. 2 roundhouse kicks going forward, slide back high roundhouse kick
    2. 2 roundhouse kicks going forward, slide back back hook kick

–          Emphasis on making a compact motion for better efficiency and less of a telegraph for any combat scenario (kicking knee shouldn’t hit a person right beside you when going into and releasing the chamber of the back hook kick)

  1. Partner Target training
    1. Above techniques using targets to enhance speed, accuracy and overall technique
    2. Freestyle double punching
    3. Must coordinate with partners creating another level of fun and challenge
  1. Preview to September HISA Combination TaeGeuk and Saam TaeGeuk Qigong
    1. One hand flows continuously doing TaeGeuk while other hand draws the Saam TaeGeuk
    2. Practice in this helps to unite both the left and right brain harmoniously.  Furthermore, sincere effort in this helps to, once in a while, have the practitioner feel no division between the perceived multiplicity of the universe
